Of course Egypt

The people of Egypt are still protesting, and appears they will not stop untill their leader is gone.  State workers have went on strike, and put a shut down to government functions.  It appears the citizens are in it for the long haul.  My question for debate is what does this mean for American, and the American people?

  1. I feel that Egypt's protests are completely justifiable in that their president has deliberately tried to send them back into the stone ages. How can you just take technology away from a developed country? sure, you can argue "it's just the internet", "people lived without it in the 60's" and "there's still millions of people who don't even know what electricity is", but that doesn't mean that this issue is dismissible. The technologies of today are often taken for granted by everyone who uses them. anyways, I'm off topic. as for what it means for America, I think not much. Yes, our government does like to stick it's noses in places it doesn't belong, and yes they may have too much power, but I honestly doubt they'll be doing anything that effects our daily lives greatly enough to cause rioting. However, If something like that WERE to happen, say the government forces phone companies to shut off 3G or 4G phone services, all hell would break loose.

  2. I complelty agree. Egypt has an elected offical, and the people have spoken they dont want him. The government if by the people for the people. It is tyranny that the their government would restrict the use of the internet. If they can take away that, what else will they take away. I wonder however their are other countries out in the middle east going through these simialr uprising, and yet no press coverage. I have to slighlty disagree with you however about the effects of our daily lives. We are apart of a global econmoy and egypts econmy will falter because of these uprising, they can effect the strenth of our currency and what about oil prices? We certinalty dont want to see that go up. Also it appears that the government will be dismantled, what will their new govnmernt bring? It can certinlty became a violent nation, and thats not good for a region with much fighting already occuring. My last point is history has shown that these revolutions dont happen in just one place, they spread, look at europe in the 19th century, will these riots cause other nations to go into uprisings?

  3. You mentioned that their government will be dismantled. That worries me. America has a history of... well.. trying to force it's government down other countries throats. perhaps we may try to make Egypt an American territory.

but Mubarak has been president of Egypt for 30 years. The man is 83. It's possible he's just becoming senile. Personally I don't think it's going to cause rioting anywhere else. these riots are completely based on the insane actions of the countries government. unless other countries follow Mubarak's actions, then there's a problem.
